Functional Movement
Re-Education of the Musculoskeletal System to Allow Pain-Free Movements During Daily Life Activities. Such simple tasks don’t seem to warrant special preparation, but functional training is an area of exercise dedicated to just that.
“Your functional fitness involves the ability to control your center of gravity and produce force in a biomechanically safe way,” says Richard Butler, M.S., U.S.P.T.A., senior exercise physiologist at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass.
“It’s the combination of balance and power that helps you swing a golf club or a tennis racquet, climb the stairs quickly, even hold your grandchild—and is essential to moving through your day with ease.”

PAIN CYCLE
Pain can interfere with activities of daily living: in the home, workplace and community. All too often, treatment for pain is ineffective and leads to a downward spiral of decreased functioning, stress, anger and isolation.
When pain persists, a person may avoid activities for fear of further pain or injury, which leads to decreased activity levels and physical deconditioning. Further, as the pain persists, negative beliefs about the pain experience and negative thoughts about themselves often develop.
For some, chronic pain leads to the loss of social and occupational responsibilities and status. Combined with social withdrawal, these substantive changes in one’s life can harbor profound demoralization and resentment. These kinds of beliefs and thoughts, along with diminished participation in enjoyable activities, contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety.
All of these things can exacerbate and maintain the pain cycle. Those most impacted feel like they are ‘prisoners of pain’.

Living with Chronic Pain
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies have faced a fair amount of criticism over the years for adopting insensitive policies and guidelines that are often harmful to the pain community. But there are growing signs the CDC and other agencies are starting to listen to or at least better understand pain patients.
On September 18, 2018, the CDC released a new report estimating that 50 million Americans – just over 20 percent of the adult population – have chronic pain. About 20 million of them have “high-impact chronic pain” -- pain severe enough that it frequently limits life or work activities.

About Me

Kat Jankowski, Owner

Clients always ask me how I got started in Massage Therapy. My response: Massage Therapy saved my life and in turn I can save others. After incurring many orthopedic traumas, I decided to change careers paths and become a Massage Therapist. I trained in a Manual based Physical Therapy Clinic for 7 years in the quest to heal my own injuries. I use many hours of research, advanced certifications, and the experience that I have acquired to find the primary cause of pain.
It is my passion to not only give those who have suffered with pain and dysfunction a hope for relief, but to instruct Massage Therapy students on the foundations of Kinesiology and Sports Performance.
